Dire Maul
Mysterious Eldre’Thelas once housed the elven Queen Azshara’s deepest arcane secrets. Although the settlement is now overrun by ogres of the Gordok tribe, magic users and scholars from all walks of life profess intrigue about those artefacts which survived the Great Sundering – the world-shattering event which split Kalimdor and left the Maul so ruined. The Maul is also home to the reclusive elves of Shen’dralar – quel’dorei masters of the arcane and possible teachers of night elven magi to come.

Overview
Dire Maul is one of the newer ‘classic’ instances, and is split into three separate wings. Each ‘district’ is occupied by a different force: either undead, demonic or elemental. Amongst the Maul’s residents is Immol’thar, a demon whose imprisonment provides warlocks with the apparatus to summon the Dreadseed of Xoroth. The Maul also provides Alliance paladins with their Charger trials.
Quests
Unlike most other instances, there are only four class-independent quests to be found outside the instance: three are found within Camp Mojache’s vicinity, and a fourth requires you to have explored Dire Maul (i.e. drawn it onto your map). The majority of quests are given inside the instances. Displaced books from the Maul’s library also offer a rare assortment of quests relation to specific character classes.
Dire Maul North is unique in that it features a ‘tribute run’. Kill only King Gordok and you shall receive tributes and quests from the surviving bosses. This process requires that you own a Gordok Ogre Suit, from the instance quest of the same name.
The minimal level required for each quest is given in [brackets]; the minimum for completing all of an instance wing’s quests is as follows:
- East: level 54
- North: level 60
- West: level 56
Dire Maul East
- [54] Orgrimmar: Camp Mojache
Travel to Feralas and speak to Talo Thornhoof.- [54] Camp Mojache, Feralas: Lethtendris’ Web
Locate the blood elf Lethtendris and return her malicious device for study.
- [54] Camp Mojache, Feralas: Lethtendris’ Web
- [54] Lariss Pavilion, Feralas: Pusillin and the Elder Azj’Tordin
Retrieve Azj’Tordin’s Book of Incantations from the imp, Pusillin. Pusillin is also said to hold the Crescent Key, opening the rest of Dire Maul.
The Cenarion Circle have a task once you’ve entered Dire Maul (not necessarily an instance portal) at least once:
- [56] Nighthaven, Moonglade: A Reliquary of Purity
Retrieve the reliquary from Southwind Village in Silithus.- [56] Nighthaven, Moonglade: Shards of the Felvine
Acquire a shard of the Felvine from around Alzzin the Wildshaper’s watch. These shards can be picked up by those not currently on the quest.
- [56] Nighthaven, Moonglade: Shards of the Felvine
Dire Maul West
- [54] Camp Mojache, Feralas: Elven Legends
Help the Camp Mojache cause by unearthing the fate of Kariel Winthalus. Completing this quest will allow players to hand libra in to Lorekeeper Lydros; these in turn allow you to enchant head and leg items. - [56] Dire Maul: The Madness Within
Destroy the 5 pylons imprisoning Immol’thar, then slay it and Prince Tortheldrin.- [56] Dire Maul: The Treasure of the Shen’dralar
Claim your reward from the library.
- [56] Dire Maul: The Treasure of the Shen’dralar
- [60] Dire Maul: Foror’s Compendium
Return the compendium which gave you this quest (dropped very rarely by bosses throughout Dire Maul) to the Athenaeum.- [60] Dire Maul: The Forging of Quel’Serrar
Hand Lydros’ blade back to him. The second phase of this quest asked for warriors and paladins to heat the blade while fighting Onyxia, then slaying her in order to receive an epic tanking sword. This no longer applies since Onyxia’s re-tuning to a level 80 raid.
- [60] Dire Maul: The Forging of Quel’Serrar
Dire Maul North
- [56] Dire Maul: The Gordok Ogre Suit
Bring the requested items (see below) to Knot Thimblejack in order to craft an ogre disguise. Tailors and leatherworkers of a skill higher than 275 may then learn the pattern for themselves, using half the material cost.- 8x Rugged Leather
- 4x Bolt of Runecloth (16x Runecloth)
- 1x Ogre Tannin (from a basket soon after finding Knot Thimblejack)
- 2x Rune Thread
- [60] Dire Maul: Free Knot!
Free Knot Thimblejack with a key from one of the ogres occupying Dire Maul. Naturally it’s a good idea to free him after he’s crafted your ogre suit.
The following quests require you to be level 60, and to have completed the tribute run ousting King Gordok:
- [60] Dire Maul: The Gordok Taste Test
- [60] Dire Maul: Unfinished Gordok Business
Reclaim a Gordok artefact from Tortheldrin, the Dire Maul West boss who turns hostile after Immol’thar is slain. Because the quest is given when you’re under the ‘It’s Good to be King’ buff, you will either have to hand it in within the same run or return another time, with a disguise or another tribute buff. There is a handy tunnel connecting the pylon courtyard to Dire Maul West’s library for this very purpose.
Arcana
Lorekeeper Lydros, found in Dire Maul West’s Athanaeum, allows players to enchant their head and leg gear long before the quartermasters in Shattrath and Dalaran. Ambiguous-sounding Libra will drop from this and other zones in Azeroth, and once the player has completed Elven Legends they may visit upon Lydros’ services. Earning an arcanum requires this libram and other reagents from trades and instances:
- Arcanum of Protection (+12 dodge rating)
- Libram of Protection
- Pristine Black Diamond (from Dire Maul, Stratholme, Scholomance and Blackrock Spire)
- 2x Large Brilliant Shard
- Frayed Abomination Stitching (from Stratholme)
- Arcanum of Focus (+8 spell power)
- Libram of Focus
- Pristine Black Diamond
- 4x Large Brilliant Shard
- 2x Skin of Shadow (from Scholomance)
- Arcanum of Rapidity (+10 haste)
- Libram of Rapidity
- Pristine Black Diamond
- 2x Large Brilliant Shard
- 2x Blood of Heroes (from Eastern & Western Plaguelands, found wild – spawns level 60 elites)
Gordok Ogre Suit
There are two means of crafting this amusing and practical suit; also a necessity for distracting King Gordok’s guard during the tribute run. One is accessible to all, as the suit comes as reward from Knot Thimblejack’s Gordok Ogre Suit quest. The other is an option for leatherworkers and tailors who have completed the quest, as they are then taught the pattern. This pattern asks for half the reagents:
- 4x Rugged Leather
- 2x Bolt of Runecloth (8x Runecloth)
- 1x Ogre Tannin
- 1x Rune Thread
